.ie domains names for businesses:

  • .ie domain names provide your business or organisation with a unique Irish identity. People will identify your organisation as being Irish, or having a presence in Ireland.
  • Greater security and more confidence – .ie domain registrations are manually checked, which is encouraging for consumers looking to do business with you.
  • Achieve a higher search engine rating. Websites using .ie domain names are ranked higher by Google.ie for Irish searches.
  • For businesses, you’ll need to provide your Irish/NI Company or Business number, and possibly a signed letter if you are registering a discretionary domain name or something completely random!.

.ie domain names for individuals:

  • Registration of personal domains were introduced in 2007 and they are very popular. This has contributed to record registration levels for .ie domains.
  • You cannot register just your first name, or just your surname, but you can choose from lots of different formats: JohnSmith.ie, John-Smith.ie, John-Paul-Smith.ie, JSmith.ie, PaulSmith.ie etc. (more info. [PDF])

Spiral Hosting become IE Accredited Registrar

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

IEDR AccreditedWe are delighted to announce that Spiral Hosting Limited have become an IE Accredited Registrar. This means that Spiral Hosting are an official reseller of Irish .ie domain names with the IE Domain Registry. We previously registered all .IE domain names through our datacentre’s accreditation.

All .IE domain names purchased through Spiral Hosting were today part of a bulk transfer to our own IEDR accreditation (excluding those that have been newly registered since 10 May 2010 which will be part of a second bulk transfer in due course). The bulk transfer is managed by the IE Domain Registry and will not affect your domain name or website in any way. The renewal date, admin-contact, nameservers etc. associated with your domain name will all remain the same.

We hope that becoming an IE Accredited Registrar will give us access to lower .IE pricing and we can then pass the savings onto our customers. There will not be any downtime during the bulk transfer and you will continue to manage all .IE domains through your Spiral Hosting Client Area.

Record Registrations for .IE Domains

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The IE Domain Registry has confirmed that there was a record number of dot-ie domains registered in 2009.

A total of 37,055 domains were registered during the year, which is an 8 percent increase on 2008 figures. There are now a total of 136,000 dot-ie domains registrations.

The fourth quarter of 2009 saw a total of 8,533 new registrations in October and December, representing a 11.5 percent rise on last year.

IEDR Chief Executive David Curtin said: “It is more encouraging still to report that overall, 2009 was our strongest year ever for .ie registrations; an 8 per cent increase on last year’s figure is significant against the backdrop of economic difficulty for businesses and consumers everywhere”.

“It is important that Irish entrepreneurs now recognise and seize opportunities for growth online.”

Internet Register Ireland domain names scam

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Spiral Hosting has today warned customers of a domain registration scam.

Internet Register Ireland has been sending letters to many of our customers, and even sending letters directly to Spiral Hosting. The company is registered in Germany, although have PO Boxes in Ireland, the UK and France. The letters request payment of €2874 over 3 years (€958 a year) for website registration services. Customers are advised to disregard the letter.

We first reported on this in September 2007 but unfortunately ‘Internet Register Ireland’ is still operating.

IE Domain Registry (the official .ie registry) have issued this press release:

—————————————————————————————-

It has once again come to the attention of the IEDR that a company operating under the name “Internet Register Ireland” is contacting businesses with registered .ie domain names by post and by fax, soliciting domain holders to register their domain name with the “Internet Register Ireland“. The “Internet Register Ireland” will request you to fill out their form and return it to them signed. It should be noted that they charge an excessive fee of approx €958 for the registration of your domain name in their database. The “Internet Register Ireland” previously operated the same practice in Ireland in September 2007 and November 2006 and have been operating similar schemes throughout Europe and Canada throughout the past year.

We would like to reassure all of our customers that no such organisation has been authorised to act on behalf of the IEDR. If you are contacted in this manner we would recommend that you disregard this letter and advise anyone you know who owns a domain name of this activity.

If you require Internet services for your domain name we would advise you to contact an official IE Reseller.
