Spiral Hosting are advising webhosting clients and our resellers to ensure that their website software is up-to-date and secure. We have noticed a recent increase in malware bots scanning websites on our servers looking for vulnerabilities in website software.

Websites that use out-of-date software could have major security flaws and may be vulnerable to hacking exploits, viruses, mal-ware and data theft. One piece of out-of-date software could give a hacker access to your entire website, databases and email accounts; the hacker could change your account passwords or delete your data so it’s very important to always use the latest software releases. The IE Domain Registry (responsible for Ireland’s .ie namespace) has reported the best performing second quarter for .ie domain registrations since records began. A total of 9,448 .ie domains were registered between April and June this year.

Registration figures for the first half of 2010 show there were 19,099 .ie domains registered in the period January to June this year, bringing the total number of .ie domains at the end of June to almost 146,000.

March and April were the strongest performing months of the year to date, with registrations totalling 3,686 and 3,262 respectively, representing increases of 2.2pc and 6.6pc on the same months in the previous year. March accounts for the highest number of registrations recorded in a single month during the past 12 months.

The price of .com and .net domain name registration will increase on 1st July 2010.

This increase has been decided by Verisign, the operator of .com and .net domain names. It is the maximum 7% increase, much to the dismay of registration companies like Spiral Hosting!

For us, this means we will pay an extra $0.48 for .com domains and $0.42 for .net domains (pricing in US Dollars). Since our business operates in three currencies our pricing is also dependent on currency fluctuations. Three months ago in March 2010 $1 was equal to €0.73; today $1 is equal to €0.81. Hence,  the currency exchange rate is not so much in our favour and margins are tight!

Unfortunately this means our selling price to you will increase for .com registrations to €8.55 (approximately $10.50 or £7.00) and .net registrations to €8.35 (approximately $10.23 or £6.83) on 1st July 2010. The new pricing will still leave Spiral Hosting as very competitive and we’ll continue to review it on a regular basis to ensure that we are passing on any possible savings and promotions to our customers.We will decrease any prices where currency fluctuations allow us to do so!

If you have domains you want to register, renew or transfer to us we recommend doing this before the price increase! This will be the third time Verisign has increased the .com/.net price since 2006, and it may happen again in 2011. We would therefore encourage multi-year renewals as this will provide insulation from registry price increases now and in the future.

Application process

The IE Domain Registry is a managed registry and therefore every .ie domain registration requires an application to be submitted. However, they have greatly relaxed the rules recently and the process is a lot less strict. We do most of the work for you!

If we need anything from you for your application, we’ll contact you once we receive your domain order. If there are any faxes or letters required, we will provide a draft letter for you to check, sign and send to us. We make it easy!

.ie domains names for businesses:

• .ie domain names provide your business or organisation with a unique Irish identity. People will identify your organisation as being Irish, or having a presence in Ireland.
• Greater security and more confidence – .ie domain registrations are manually checked, which is encouraging for consumers looking to do business with you.
• Achieve a higher search engine rating. Websites using .ie domain names are ranked higher by Google.ie for Irish searches.
• For businesses, you’ll need to provide your Irish/NI Company or Business number, and possibly a signed letter if you are registering a discretionary domain name or something completely random!.

.ie domain names for individuals:

• Registration of personal domains were introduced in 2007 and they are very popular. This has contributed to record registration levels for .ie domains.

The bulk transfer is managed by the IE Domain Registry and will not affect your domain name or website in any way. The renewal date, admin-contact, nameservers etc. associated with your domain name will all remain the same.

We hope that becoming an IE Accredited Registrar will give us access to lower .IE pricing and we can then pass the savings onto our customers. There will not be any downtime during the bulk transfer and you will continue to manage all .IE domains through your Spiral Hosting Client Area.
